Simpson-Daniel joins England squad

Gloucester wing James Simpson-Daniel has been drafted into Brian Ashton’s squad ahead of England’s visit to Murrayfield on Saturday.

The 25-year-old has been in sparkling form this season with 11 tries in 20 appearances and impressed on Saturday in his side’s 30-25 defeat at Harlequins, where he scored one try, made another with a superb break, and executed a try-saving tackle.

Simpson-Daniel’s injury problems have hampered his international career to date and he missed out on a place in England’s World Cup squad after Ashton cited ‘durability’ issues with the former Sedbergh school pupil.

“I know I just have to knuckle down in the next few days and just do the best I can, which is what I have been doing for Gloucester,” he said.

Simpson-Daniel joins Quins scrum half Danny Care in the squad after the former Leeds youngster was called up late last week.

Ashton will name his 22 for the Calcutta Cup clash on Tuesday.
